PROGRESSIVE MEDIA CONNECTIONS:

America’s Liberal/Progressive Media Directory for Curious Minds!

Ronald L. Krannich, Ph.D**

Like much of American politics, today’s media tends to be polarized from left to right with an increasingly shrinking center. While at one time ostensibly neutral, with a bias toward objectivity and publicizing “just the facts,” today’s media tends to reflect political orientations and opinions, some stronger and more judgmental than others. In other words, today’s media has “attitude,” “reflects values,” and “takes stands” — behaviors that become translated in some circles as “media bias” and “fake news.”

If you want to explore the left-right orientation of the media, two useful websites specialize in ranking the biases of hundreds of media outlets and include popular visual charts that attempt to differentiate one outlet’s orientation from another:

The following directory identifies major U.S. media outlets that have a reputation for being liberal/progressive, which means they are primarily center to center-left. Some are arguably left to strong-left in orientation. Whatever the case, please use this list to explore the rich tapestry of today’s liberal/progressive media. As with the Hamilton’s Progressive Opportunities Directory, this one also is a “work in progress.” Please send me any additional media recommendations to include in this directory (rkrannich@gmail.com or Tel. 703-298-8128). Enjoy the so-called Fourth Branch of government that is supposed to keep our democracy safe from ourselves . . . and the excesses of others!

This review article is the third in a trilogy of hyperlinked articles developed by Ron for individuals and organizations interested in progressive ideas and action. His two other related articles focus on progressive opportunities (advocacy groups) and progressive reading list. Both are available through these sections of the Skidaway Hamiltons’s website:

Taken together, these three important resource review articles go a long way to defining what it means to be a concerned and active liberal/progressive in today’s America.
